Recently I wrote a TechnoFeature for Technolawyer entitled “Mythbusters: Should Your Law Firm switch from Windows to Mac?“ Needless to say, it was a very controversial article. But the thing that amazed me the most is the absolute vitriol spewed forth by some Mac advocates. I even received an anonymous email from someone that basically told me where to stick it (in no uncertain terms). Now I’ve written controversial articles before (WordPerfect versus Word, to name one) but I have never been personally subjected to the kind of abuse that I was subjected to after writing my Mac Myths article. Nevermind that I had facts to back up my assertions, the “Cult of Mac” couldn’t be bothered; it was all emotion for them. And, since I’ve written that article, there have been more facts regarding my assertion that the Mac OS is not as secure as the cult-followers would have you believe. Did you know that the Snow Leopard OS now has a “malware protection” function? So, that sounds like a tacit admission that the Mac OS has had issues with malware. However, while Apple has included this new function in their latest OS, this protection only scans for two Trojans. Check out the ZDNet article here. So, let’s have the debate but let’s base it in facts and not personalities.
